Obituary of John Reid

The family of John Alfred Reid are announcing his passing on October 3, 2024, in Halifax, NS. John is predeceased by his parents, Margaret (Campbell) and Allister Reid of Amherst.  He was born August 22, 1951, grew up in Amherst, and attended the Melrose Street Kindergarten, Acadia Street School, and Amherst Regional High School. 

John loved cars, and spent as much time as he could around them. When he was quite young, he worked briefly at Tantramar Motors, and in high school, he worked at East End Shell.  In November 1970, he was in a car accident on Fenwick Hill that caused a severe spinal cord injury resulting in John becoming almost completely paralyzed from the neck down. In spite of this traumatic injury, John’s love of cars never wavered. In the years that followed, John continued to hang out with friends, enjoy a good party, go to dances and shows, get his GED, take some courses at Mount Allison University, and, for many years, live quite independently in his apartment in Halifax. Also, for many years, he volunteered at the Captain William Spry Library in Spryfield and the Keshen Goodman Library in Halifax.

John always enjoyed having people around to talk and joke and get the news, and he deeply appreciated any time people would spend with him visiting and doing favours. He loved a cup of coffee, a bag of chips, and a Coffee Crisp Bar, and especially the red sweater, toque, and mittens that Mom knit for him.

John is survived by his sister Cheryl (Charlie/Chuck) Jones of Middle Sackville, and Cheryl’s children and grandchildren, and also by his sister Linda Reid (Herman Eickholt) of Amherst, and Linda’s children.

Arrangements are under the care of Eagles Funeral Home in Westville, NS. Cremation has taken place, and interment will take place at a later date in Auburn Cemetery in Westville, Pictou County, where he will join Mom, Dad, and Dad’s parents and sister.
