Obituary of Margaret Anna Dakens

Margaret Anna Dakens, age 98, of Westville Road, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.

Born in New Glasgow, on January 2, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Rena (Deveau) O’Donnell.

Marg was a faithful member of the Holy Name Church and a long time member of the C.W.L., the Church Choir, and Inter- parish Choir, she was also a member of the Westville Heritage Club, the Ukelele Club, the Bowling Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. After her mother’s death, Marg became a mother figure to many of her siblings.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Rena Hamilton (Dave), Bath, Ont.; Shirley Dewtie (John), Broadway; sons, John, Oxford; James (Melinda), Elginburg, Ont.; and son-in-law Bryan Johnson, Petawawa, Ont.; grandchildren, Joey, Jeanine, and Donna (nee Dewtie); Jamie, Rachel, Marianne, Travis and Heidi (nee Dakens), and Gordon Johnson; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Rose Owen, and Theresa Kahnt, both of Ontario.

She was predeceased by her husband John; daughter Anna Johnson; great-grand-daughter Brette; sisters, Rena, Myra, and Gertrude; and brothers, Joe, John, Art, Anthony, Cyril, Henry, and Patrick O’Donnell.

Mrs. Dakens rested at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Thursday, March 7. Her funeral service was held Friday, March 8 from the Church of the Holy Name, Westville with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Spring burial will be in the Holy Name Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Holy Name Church or a charity of one’s choice.
